![]() ![]() I absolutely adore his drive, passion and commitment to preservation, and share all of his criticisms of the current market realities of how old games are preserved and distributed. If I ever met eXo in person, I'd give him the biggest bear-hug of his life. ![]() I also recently had a long email chat with eXo, maker of the eXoDOS, eXoWin3x and eXoScummVM packs, and he kindly agreed to publishing it all as an interview on RetroRGB where I occasionally (not frequently enough, sorry Bob) write articles: ![]() But I hope my love of spreading warm and fuzzy retro nostalgia vibes around the place is well known by now, and makes it pretty obvious how much I love these things as a vehicle for less technical (or time poor) folk to get a hold of retro things that are simple "plug and play" devices with little mucking about involved to just get on with the games.Īnd that also got me thinking that, while there are plenty of these things on the market commercially from companies where IP legalities of old software are fairly easy (Sega, Nintendo, Sony, NEC/PCEngine, Commodore 64 and Amiga, etc all have mini consoles on the market), we will likely NEVER see things like the above hypothetical "Apple II Mini" or "Win9x PC Mini" due to just too many technical and publisher/licensing complexities. For someone like myself who's fairly familiar with emulators and various other retro software things, I'm not really the target market. Similarly I assisted kjparker with a MAME setup for his own personal "Vectrex Mini" which he's now building a set of custom controllers for, and it's looking great.Īnd that got me thinking - I adore these various commercial mini consoles and computers as a concept. I mentioned the all-powerful MAME, coupled with 4am's Total Replay image, which pretty much turns a left over Raspberry Pi 2B or faster device into an "Apple II Mini" running at full speed with no frame drops or significant lag. ![]() I was chatting to QuakeDude the other day, and he mentioned his want for something to rekindle his childhood Apple II memories.
